Buddy Teaser: Too Many Cooks Creator Casper Kelly Makes His Feature Film Debut
After captivating audiences with his wildly popular surreal project Too Many Cooks, Casper Kelly is stepping into feature films with Buddy, featuring Cristin Milioti, Delaney Quinn, Topher Grace, Keegan-Michael Key, Michael Shannon, and Patton Oswalt. Having premiered at Sundance earlier this year, the film centers on a children's show that takes a turn for the unexpected, and Roadside Attractions will release it in theaters starting August 28. In anticipation of the release, the first teaser has been unveiled.
Here’s the synopsis: “Do you remember BUDDY—the vivid orange unicorn and star of that beloved children’s TV show who brought joy and important life lessons into homes? Within the vibrant realm of ‘It’s Buddy!,’ a group of kids spends their time singing, dancing, and helping Buddy spread happiness. However, when one child refuses to participate, Buddy becomes upset, revealing cracks in this seemingly flawless world.”
Caleb Hammond noted in his Sundance review, “A combination of Barney and Blue's Clues, the TV series Buddy showcases a large pink unicorn and a cast of anthropomorphized household items, each episode imparting a new lesson to the children. Every aspect of the show—from the colorful sets to the ’90s attire worn by the kids, to the songs they sing—demonstrates Kelly’s thorough grasp of the aesthetics and conventions of the genre that he cleverly subverts.”
