The October lineup from The Criterion Collection includes The Silence of the Lambs and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein in 4K, along with works by Jerzy Skolimowski and Samuel Fuller.
The Criterion Collection has just revealed its slate for October today, but it has already been at the forefront of discussions for almost a month. This illustrates the influence and appeal of a complete Stanley Kubrick box set, which could have easily served as the cornerstone of Criterion’s entire lineup. Fortunately, this is not the case, and staying true to tradition, October will focus on horror—particularly with a 4K enhancement of The Silence of the Lambs, which includes essays by Willow Catelyn Maclay and Caden Mark Gardner from Corpses of Fools and Monsters in its booklet. Also noteworthy is Criterion’s UHD release of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, which presents The Reborn Cut, a 158-minute version of the film.
On the fringes of the genre are Ngozi Onwurah’s Welcome II the Terrordome, which comes to Blu-ray following its theatrical rerelease by Janus Films, a Blu-ray of Jerzy Skolimowski’s The Shout, and—because nothing is quite as frightening as addiction—a new 4K release of Uli Edel’s Christiane F. Standing apart and in a category of its own is a Blu-ray upgrade of the fifth Eclipse title, The First Films of Samuel Fuller, featuring three outstanding works by a prominent American filmmaker.
