      This cross-continental hit follows two college students who stumble upon something unexpected, leading to life-changing consequences.

      It ranked as the No. 11 movie at the domestic box office in 1981.

      With a nurse featured (above), you might assume it’s a medical drama. In a peculiar way, it indeed is.

      Featuring David Naughton, Griffin Dunne, and Jenny Agutter, An American Werewolf in London was a significant success for writer-director John Landis, who was riding high after his breakout hit with The Kentucky Fried Movie in the ’70s and then directing Animal House and The Blues Brothers back-to-back.

      He later directed Trading Places, Coming to America, and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video, among many other hits.

      1982 Answer: An Officer and a Gentleman

      Richard Gere and Debra Winger shared undeniable chemistry in An Officer and a Gentleman, which earned Louis Gossett Jr. an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, shown in the mud with Gere in the previous image.

      The narrative follows Zack Mayo (Gere), a U.S. Navy Aviation Officer candidate who falls for Paula (Winger) while trying to gain the approval of Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley, portrayed by Gossett.

      The film’s blend of romance and military bravado later inspired another hit ’80s film, Top Gun.

      This sequel features the extremely fit gentleman on the left reprising one of his most famous roles.

      It was directed by fellow Italian Stallion Sylvester Stallone, and released between Rocky III and Rocky IV.

      1983 Answer: Staying Alive

      This wildly ambitious sequel to Saturday Night Fever sees Travolta's character transitioning from the disco scene to becoming a dance teacher in Manhattan, aspiring for Broadway.

      At one point, it was the highest-grossing movie to hold a zero rating on Rotten Tomatoes, until a critic finally gave it a positive review, lifting it from that unfortunate label.

      We watched it with our mom, who adored Travolta, Stallone, and dance movies, and she found it quite enjoyable.

      Phoebe Cates and Zach Galligan headlined this remarkable creature feature, which became the No. 3 film at the box office in 1984.

      Galligan portrays a young man who receives an adorable pet for Christmas—a furry creature known as a mogwai, which remains cuddly as long as three rules are followed: Keep it away from bright light, don’t let it get wet, and never feed it after midnight.

      Sadly for the characters in the film — but fortunately for audiences — those rules are broken. Gremlins is one of the most significant films of 1984 and a massive hit.
