Olivia Colman Brings Alexander Skarsgård to Life in the Initial Trailer for Wicker
A unique love story of the year, Wicker, directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, features a narrative in which a woman (Olivia Colman) hires the local basketmaker (Peter Dinklage) to create a wicker husband (Alexander Skarsgård). With Elizabeth Debicki also in the cast and filmed by Lol Crawley (The Brutalist), the movie is set to release on October 23 through Black Bear Pictures, accompanied by the debut of its first trailer.
The synopsis reads: “An audacious comedic fable about sex, marriage, and the absurdities of social norms, WICKER tells the entirely original love story of an ostracized fisherwoman (Olivia Colman) who requests the local basketmaker (Peter Dinklage) to craft her a husband. When her wicker husband (Alexander Skarsgård) turns out to be more extraordinary than she expected, his soulful essence and unique talents spark something within her, igniting a wave of jealousy, intrigue, and turmoil that threatens the very core of village life.”
In his Sundance review, Kent M. Wilhelm remarked, “This second feature is a whimsical period piece set in an era and place that never existed. The screenplay, adapted from Ursula Wills-Jones’s short story The Wicker Husband, critiques patriarchal relationship dynamics and traditions. The world they create is like a funhouse mirror reflection of reality, offering a heightened environment that, despite its anachronistic aspects, feels credible. The characters lack conventional names; instead, as a commentary on the outdated custom of wives taking their husband’s last name, men are identified by their professions and women by their connections to those men. We witness the inherent cruelty of this society through the eyes of an outsider who does not conform and becomes a target of mockery. Contrasting their harshness is the amusing and vulgar way in which the villagers interact, injecting humor into their meanness. In addition to the sharp cultural satire, Wicker surprises with a standout feature: a wicker Alexander Skarsgård.”
