John Turturro Strives in the Initial Trailer for The Only Living Pickpocket in New York

Despite his illustrious career spanning several decades, John Turturro has not yet received an Oscar nomination. This may change this year with the premiere of Noah Segan’s film The Only Living Pickpocket at Sundance in New York. The film also features Giancarlo Esposito, Will Price, Tatiana Maslany, and Steve Buscemi, and Sony Pictures Classics has just unveiled the first trailer. The movie is set to open in New York and Los Angeles on October 23 and will expand to a nationwide release on October 30.

Here’s the synopsis: “Harry is a traditional hustler. A quintessential native New Yorker, he navigates life by greasing palms with cash, relying on his cleverness and contacts. However, times are shifting for Harry. His daily haul is no longer about cash and watches; it’s now credit cards and cell phones. One unfortunate evening involves cryptocurrency and a firearm. The Only Living Pickpocket in New York offers a nostalgic glimpse into the life of a small-time criminal adapting to today’s digitally connected world. Writer/Director Noah Segan’s contemporary setting thrives on the remnants of a bygone era, with energetic action vividly brought to life by a fantastic cast, highlighted by John Turturro’s remarkable performance as Harry.

Kent M. Wilhelm commented in our review, “Segan’s vibrant journey through the five boroughs serves as a poignant reflection on the gritty crime dramas of a city that retains its crime while losing its raw edge. Segan aims to reconcile the evolving circumstances for an aging pickpocket with a heart of gold, whose relevance in the city has faded just like the payphone. It’s a fusion of The Wild Bunch and Gloria in a captivating narrative about reconciling the highs and lows of life, and whether that truly matters in the end.”
