John Turturro Shines in First Trailer for The Only Living Pickpocket in New York
Despite a remarkable career spanning decades, John Turturro has yet to receive an Oscar nomination. This might change this year with Noah Segan’s film The Only Living Pickpocket, which premiered at Sundance. The cast also includes Giancarlo Esposito, Will Price, Tatiana Maslany, and Steve Buscemi. Sony Pictures Classics has just unveiled the first trailer for the film, which will open in New York and Los Angeles on October 23, followed by a nationwide expansion on October 30.
The synopsis reads: “Harry is a traditional hustler. A quintessential native New Yorker, he navigates life by greasing palms with cash, relying on his cleverness and connections. However, Harry's world is changing. His daily pickpocket haul has shifted from cash and watches to credit cards and smartphones. And one unfortunate night, it also involves cryptocurrency and a firearm. The Only Living Pickpocket in New York portrays a nostalgic image of a low-level criminal adapting to today’s digitally interconnected society. Writer/Director Noah Segan’s contemporary cityscape is infused with remnants of a bygone era, with action vividly brought to life by a stellar cast, led by John Turturro’s outstanding performance as Harry.
In our review, Kent M. Wilhelm noted, “Segan’s vibrant journey through the five boroughs serves as a reflective commentary on the gritty crime dramas of a city that has retained crime but polished away the grit. Segan seeks to reconcile the evolving landscape for an aging pickpocket with a heart of gold, whose relevance in the city has diminished like the payphone. It’s a captivating narrative akin to The Wild Bunch meets Gloria, exploring the dichotomy of good and bad in life, and whether it ultimately matters.”
