Deepfakes become lethal in the trailer for the horror-thriller Appofeniacs.

      After its festival circuit, which included a premiere at last year's FrightFest, Magento Light Studios has unveiled a trailer for Chris Marrs Piliero's psychological horror-thriller, Appofeniacs.

      The film focuses on a group of interconnected individuals who face dire consequences when a series of AI-generated deepfakes are made public, leading them to accept the false content in the videos as truth.

      The cast features Aaron Holliday, Simran Jehani, Paige Searcy, Sean Gunn, Michael Abbott Jr., Harley Bronwyn, Will Brandt, Jermaine Fowler, Scarlett DeMeo, and Chad Addison. You can watch the trailer below...

      Duke (Aaron Holliday) finds amusement in taking advantage of our tendency to trust what we see and hear, treating deepfakes as a viral party trick. His motivations are not to prove anything; he simply enjoys the chaos. As violence erupts, Duke isn’t left to handle the aftermath.

      The intertwining narratives reveal the repercussions of Duke’s trivial pursuits: Poppy (Simran Jehani), who heads into the desert for a weekend of cosplay and flirtation; Clinto Binto (Sean Gunn), a well-known figure in the scene whose reputation is too pricey to fabricate; and Lazzy (Paige Searcy), a person who mistakenly picks the wrong line, the wrong café, and the wrong day to start an argument.

      Paranoia. Confirmation bias. Groundless certainty. We are all APPOFENIACS. When anyone's interpretation of the truth can be fabricated with a simple click, the real horror lies not in the deception itself, but in the consequences of those who choose to believe it.

      Appofeniacs will be released in theaters on October 2nd.
