The British Film Institute has unveiled a new 4K restoration and release of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s highly controversial film Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom, which is a loose adaptation of the Marquis de Sade’s novel The 120 Days of Sodom. The film depicts a group of libertines in fascist Italy who capture several teenagers and subject them to severe physical, mental, and sexual violence and torture. Since its premiere, Pasolini’s final and most provocative work has been banned, censored, and condemned globally. Presented now in a new 4K restoration, Salò’s extreme content and imagery continue to shock, repel, and disturb viewers. Nevertheless, it remains an important cinematic work that is culturally significant, politically relevant, and visually captivating.
Inspired by a novel by the Marquis de Sade and set in the small fascist republic that Mussolini established in Italy, this film explores themes of power, corruption, and the degradation of the human body. It serves as a devastating and furious statement from one of cinema's most controversial filmmakers.
