Jonny Greenwood has confirmed that Paul Thomas Anderson has chosen his next feature film.

Recently, we discovered that a surprise film by Paul Thomas Anderson, titled Cameron Winter at Carnegie Hall, will be released this year, premiering at the New York Film Festival before a November roadshow. However, his next narrative feature might arrive sooner than anticipated. According to his long-time collaborator Jonny Greenwood, PTA has settled on his next project following the six-time Oscar-winning One Battle After Another.

“Paul is close to making the decision on the next film, I believe, and I'm already trying to learn a new instrument that will be key to it,” Greenwood told Screen Daily. “The process is rather lengthy.”

He continued, “It might not take long at all; he had several ideas and seems to have picked one, gaining momentum again. You often think a new film will take years, and many do. However, he managed to complete Licorice Pizza in just a few months.”

Greenwood also mentioned how he immerses himself entirely in the collaboration with PTA, stating, “When I'm working on a film for Paul, it consumes my thoughts for months. I don’t have a team or anyone helping me, which is beneficial because it allows me to obsess over it for a long time. The downside is that I can rarely handle more than one or two films a year. About five years ago, I felt I could professionalize, build a team, and streamline the process. But that's not really my style. I suppose that's the secret – I’ve been fortunate to work with someone who lets me take as much time as I need while he’s filming. I’ve never faced a scenario where I have to rush and finish a film within three weeks with a team of arrangers, which is common for many composers. When Paul comes in to see me work, he finds it amusing because it feels like an amateur setup with just me, some paper, a non-functioning printer, and the orchestra arriving tomorrow. But he knows I take it very seriously. He has a great sense of humor – very European in style.”

Regarding Anderson's potential next film, he has mentioned a jazz project set in the 1940s that might feature Denzel Washington, as well as a new Thomas Pynchon novel that could be adapted. Ultimately, though, it’s likely something entirely original, and we’ll only find out more when the trailer is released.
