Maggio sul Criterion Channel presenta David Chase, Magellan, remake degli anni '80 e altro ancora

      Potresti aver dimenticato (o del tutto trascurato) che David Chase ha scritto e diretto solo un film di lungometraggio, e che la sua rielaborazione in bianco e nero è disponibile esclusivamente in streaming sul Criterion Channel. Per integrare il suo grande Not Fade Away, il creatore dei Soprano ha programmato e partecipato a un'intervista per un nuovo Adventures in Moviegoing che debutterà questo maggio, vantando L’Atalante di Jean Vigo, Elevator to the Gallows di Louis Malle e Lacombe, Lucien, Viridiana di Luis Buñuel e Il sorpasso di Dino Risi. Più che anticipare l'intervista, investirò (un po') di speranza che questo metta nell'universo (proprio abbastanza) energia per un altro film da una delle grandi menti del cinema americano.

      Il programma di punta di maggio sembra essere ’80s Remakes (e i loro originali!), che fa esattamente ciò che promette: Breathless e Breathless, The Thing e The Thing, The Man Who Loved Women e il più vicino Burt Reynolds sia mai arrivato a Truffaut. Nel frattempo, Office Romances offre un mix di Working Girls di Dorothy Arzner, His Girl Friday, The Apartment e The Whole Town’s Talking, gravemente sottovalutato di John Ford. Jonathan Ali ha programmato come ospite You Don’t Get Freedom, You Take Freedom: Caribbean Activist Cinema, con titoli come Bitter Cane e West Indies di Med Hondo. Per quanto riguarda le prime, Conbody vs Everybody di Debra Granik fa il suo debutto sul Channel, mentre Magellan di Lav Diaz, Lumière, le cinéma! di Thierry Fremaux e una restaurazione di The Spirit of ’45 di Ken Loach fanno la loro apparizione.

      Le edizioni Criterion di Él di Buñuel, Woman of the Year, Cat People e His Girl Friday iniziano a essere disponibili in streaming. I Ross Brothers, Kimi Takesue e Bill Douglas hanno ciascuno una serie di film in streaming, incluso il preferito dell'era COVID Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets.
