La programmazione di luglio del Criterion Channel presenta Harry Dean Stanton, Jonathan Demme, Il prigioniero e altro ancora.

      Forse dovrò bruciare la mia carta cinefila se suggerisco che la migliore aggiunta del Criterion Channel il mese prossimo—la migliore aggiunta dell'anno?—è una serie TV. Ma ho effettivamente esalato un sospiro leggendo che stanno aggiungendo tutti e 17 gli episodi di The Prisoner di Patrick McGoohan, che vanta contemporaneamente surrealismo anni '60, storia di spionaggio, esperimento strutturale e un needledrop dei Beatles per eccellenza. Prima che qualcuno (forse il tanto vociferato Christopher Nolan) adatti e non riesca a contenere The Prisoner in forma di lungometraggio, guardate questo e diventate ossessionati da esso secondo i propri termini (e magari consultate Reddit per il miglior ordine di visione possibile).

      Passiamo al cinema, come di solito faccio. Luglio include anche una retrospettiva di 18 film su Harry Dean Stanton che spazia da Ride in the Whirlwind di Monte Hellman, scritto da Jack Nicholson, a Lucky di John Carroll Lynch, con in mezzo David Lynch, Martin Scorsese, Wim Wenders, Alex Cox, John Carpenter—Gesù, che filmografia aveva questo tizio! Jonathan Demme e Terry Zwigoff sono oggetto di retrospettive di quattro e due titoli, rispettivamente; Joel Potrykus, Khyentse Norbu, Onyeka Igwe e l'attrice messicana Ninón Sevilla sono anche messi in evidenza. Per una portata più ampia, il BlackStar Film Festival riceve il giusto riconoscimento con una serie estesa di lungometraggi e cortometraggi.

      Nuovi in streaming ci sono il documentario di Marc Maron Are We Good?; The Energy War in tre parti di D. A. Pennebaker, Chris Hegedus e Pat Powell; i film di Hong Kong People's Hero e Pom Pom and Hot Hot; e Bye Bye Love di Isao Fujisawa. Per qualcosa che puoi guardare più facilmente con i tuoi genitori, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure e Bad Love di Curtis Hanson fanno la loro apparizione, mentre Nightclubbing: The Birth of Punk Rock in NYC e A Band Called Death offrono un po' di sollievo musicale.
