The initial trailer for Andrew Ahn's The Wedding Banquet revisits an Ang Lee classic.

Ang Lee might be taking some time to initiate his next film, as his Bruce Lee biopic is set to finally begin production this year. However, one of his earlier classics is receiving a contemporary adaptation first. The newest project from Driveways and Fire Island director Andrew Ahn is The Wedding Banquet, which features a cast including Lily Gladstone, Bowen Yang, Kelly Marie Tran, Joan Chen, Han Gi-chan, and Youn Yuh-jung. The screenplay is co-written with James Schamus, who also co-wrote and produced the original 1993 romantic comedy. Following its premiere at Sundance and in anticipation of Bleecker Street's spring release on April 18, the first trailer has now been unveiled.

Here’s the synopsis: "From Director Andrew Ahn comes a delightful comedy of misunderstandings about a chosen family navigating the trials and joys of familial expectations, queerness, and cultural identity. Angela and her partner Lee have faced challenges with their IVF treatments but cannot afford to pursue another round. Meanwhile, their friend Min, the closeted heir of a global corporate empire, has ample family wealth but a student visa that is soon expiring. When his commitment-averse boyfriend Chris turns down his proposal, Min makes a different proposition to Angela: a green card marriage in exchange for financing Lee’s IVF. However, their plan to elope quietly is disrupted when Min’s doubtful grandmother unexpectedly arrives from Korea, demanding a grand wedding celebration. With an ensemble cast of multigenerational talent that includes Bowen Yang, Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-chan, Joan Chen, and Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-jung, this fresh reinterpretation of Ang Lee’s cherished, award-winning romantic comedy is filled with humor and warmth, serving as a poignant reminder that being part of a family involves learning to both accept and forgive."

“Weddings are profoundly significant milestones in the evolution of relationships, even those that are fictitious. The act of planning and experiencing one fosters growth in relationships,” Ahn remarked. “I was particularly focused on conveying a story that resonates with the community as I have known it growing up.”
