David Cronenberg's The Shrouds Announced for Spring Release with New Teaser Released

After his eagerly awaited return with Crimes of the Future, David Cronenberg made his comeback to the festival circuit last year with The Shrouds, a darkly humorous conspiracy thriller featuring Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, and newly nominated Oscar contender Guy Pearce. Acquired by Sideshow and Janus Films, it has now been announced that the Cannes, TIFF, and NYFF selection will debut in New York and Los Angeles on April 18, with a nationwide release following on April 25.

Here’s the synopsis: “Karsh (Vincent Cassel) is a wealthy businessman who has been inconsolable since the death of his wife. To cope, he develops GraveTech, an innovative and controversial technology that allows the living to monitor their departed loved ones in their burial shrouds. One night, multiple graves, including that of Karsh’s wife, are vandalized. Karsh sets out to identify those responsible.”

Rory O’Connor commented in our Cannes review, “David Cronenberg’s films often portray a future where technology infiltrates our collective psyche. After 55 years in the director’s unmatched career, has that future finally arrived? In Cronenberg’s latest film—an intricate and polished effort titled The Shrouds—there are two barely speculative ideas: the possibility of creating an AI chatbot resembling a recently deceased loved one; and more significantly, that a company might think it wise to surround our dearly departed with HD cameras before they are buried, enabling us to monitor their decaying bodies with just a tap on an app.”

Watch the new teaser below. Although Cronenberg has not formally revealed his next project, he mentioned at last fall’s Marrakech Film Festival that he plans to work on a script adapted from his 2014 novel Consumed, which could be his forthcoming feature.
