Xolo Maridueña anticipates the premiere of the Blue Beetle animated series in 2026.
With Cobra Kai set to conclude in less than two weeks, Xolo Maridueña is looking forward to one of his upcoming projects, reprising his superhero role as Jamie Reyes/Blue Beetle in an animated series located within James Gunn’s DC Universe.
Maridueña portrayed Blue Beetle in the 2023 film, where he played Jamie Reyes, a young man who discovers a mysterious alien device known as the Scarab, which equips him with a high-tech powered suit. With the Scarab, he must defend his family from a corrupt company that seeks to exploit it for their own gain.
Blue Beetle was among the final films of the previous DCEU lineup. Despite its underwhelming box office performance, it received generally positive reviews from both critics and audiences. This response led Gunn to consider retaining Blue Beetle and Maridueña for the new DC film universe he shares with Peter Safran. In the meantime, Maridueña will first reprise his role in an animated series before possibly returning in a live-action DC film.
Speaking to The Direct during the Saturn Awards, Maridueña discussed the series’ progress, stating, “I’m ready to come back. We’re putting a lot of effort into this animated project, aiming to finalize everything this year so we can showcase it next year,” hinting at a potential 2026 premiere.
As for Gunn, he has a substantial workload as the co-head of DC Studios. He is currently in post-production on Superman and has recently completed the first season of his animated series Creature Commandos on Max, while preparing to direct the second season of Peacemaker. Additionally, he is producing Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which began filming at the end of January.
Maridueña mentioned Gunn’s role and the timeline for production, saying, “Look, he’s busy with his work. I don’t want to interrupt while he’s focusing. But I can say that once they finish this three-course meal, I’m ready.”
Gunn has previously stated that Blue Beetle and the character will play “an amazing part of the DCU going forward!” Maridueña expressed his confidence in Gunn’s commitment, saying, “I have no reason to doubt him.”
