Legendary and Hasbro join forces to develop a film and television franchise based on Magic: The Gathering.
Prepare your cards and spells, Magic fans. Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment are joining forces to bring the acclaimed card game Magic: The Gathering to life in a vast film and television universe.
Since its creation in 1993, Magic: The Gathering has become a global phenomenon. Even after more than 30 years, it continues to thrive with competitive tournaments and championships for avid players, alongside a thriving market for collectible and rare cards.
In this card game, players take on the role of planeswalkers, a group of mages and spellcasters who harness various forms of magic to safeguard the world and combat their foes. While the franchise has already branched out into novels, comics, and video games, this marks the first time it will be adapted into a film and TV series, although Netflix previously attempted to develop both a live-action and animated series.
The first project will be a Magic: The Gathering feature film, paving the way for several TV series and additional media. Legendary chairman Mary Parent commented on the forthcoming universe, stating, "We take pride in being careful custodians of beloved IP, and no property embodies that better than Magic: The Gathering. Together with the exceptional Hasbro team, we're excited to create a multimedia universe that excites long-time fans and attracts a new generation."
Zev Foreman, Hasbro’s Head of Film, remarked on the partnership, saying, "This is an exciting and complementary collaboration, linking one of the world's most iconic brands with a strong and experienced steward. Magic: The Gathering has inspired years of imaginative world-building and storytelling. It aligns perfectly with Legendary’s diverse approach to marquee IP, and we’re eager to work together to create a brand new Magic: The Gathering universe."
What are your thoughts on Magic: The Gathering embarking on its own cinematic universe? Are you enthusiastic about the possibilities, or do you think it might fall short of the franchise's vastness? Share your thoughts with us on our social media platforms @Flickeringmyth…
