First Glimpse of Carla Simón’s Alcarràs Sequel Romería
After her beautifully heartfelt initial features, *Summer 1993* and *Alcarràs*, Carla Simon has recently completed the final segment of her informal family trilogy with *Romería*. As she prepares for a festival premiere this year, MK2 Films has released the first image from the film, which was photographed by Hélène Louvart (*La Chimera, Never Rarely Sometimes Always*).
The synopsis is as follows: “*Romería* tells the story of Marina, an 18-year-old woman who became an orphan at a young age, as she travels to Spain’s Atlantic coast to meet her paternal grandparents for the first time and seek their signature for a scholarship application. As she explores this unfamiliar side of her family, she faces a past marked by absence and deep-seated emotions. What starts as a straightforward task rapidly evolves into an emotional confrontation with a family history shaped by the painful gaps created by a generation affected by addiction and illness.”
“Upon discovering that my biological mother had a passion for flamenco, my curiosity for this genre significantly grew, due to its history and unique ability to connect profoundly with emotions,” the director mentioned about the project when it was initially revealed. “In this instance, music and dance present a challenge I deem essential for my artistic and cinematic growth with each new project. I find it thrilling and invigorating to revive this genre of film and adapt it to the present day, just as flamenco has continually evolved and adjusted to contemporary realities.”
