A sequel to the Goonies, produced by Steven Spielberg, is advancing at Warner Bros.
Hey everyone! It seemed like the likelihood of uncovering One-Eyed Willy's treasure was greater than the chance of a sequel to Richard Donner’s 1985 classic, The Goonies. But get ready to crank up some Cyndi Lauper and feel the excitement because a follow-up produced by Steven Spielberg is indeed in the works at Warner Bros.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has enlisted Potsy Ponciroli (Greedy People) to write the script, while the original film’s creative team—Steven Spielberg, Chris Columbus, and Lauren Shuler Donner—will be returning to produce. Although a director has not yet been attached, that person will be stepping into the role once held by the legendary Richard Donner, who sadly passed away in 2021.
The Goonies, inspired by a story from Spielberg and adapted into a screenplay by Columbus, premiered in the summer of ’85 and went on to earn $125 million globally against a budget of only $19 million. Its most remarkable achievement, however, is the lasting legacy it has created, allowing multiple generations to enjoy adventures with The Goonies for the past 40 years.
For years, there have been discussions about a sequel, with Spielberg mentioning he frequently brainstormed ideas for one with Chris Columbus and Richard Donner, though they could never discover an idea that surpassed the original Goonies film from the ‘80s.
There are currently no details about whether any of the original cast will reprise their roles or if this new Goonies iteration will feature a fresh group of kids. Let us know your thoughts on this—would you prefer to see the original cast return, or should this concept be left behind like One-Eyed Willy's treasure?
