After one of the most successful films of his career with last year's Longlegs, Nicolas Cage makes his return this year with The Surfer, a beach-themed psychological thriller directed by Lorcan Finnegan (Vivarium, Nocebo). Following its debut at the Cannes Film Festival last year, Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions acquired the film and have now released a new trailer in anticipation of its May 2 premiere.

Here’s the synopsis: “In the psychological thriller directed by Lorcan Finnegan, a man goes back to the picturesque beach of his childhood to surf with his son. However, his enthusiasm to hit the waves is interrupted by a group of locals whose motto is ‘don’t live here, don’t surf here.’ Humiliated and enraged, the man finds himself entangled in a conflict that escalates alongside the oppressive summer heat, pushing him to his limits."

Rory O’Connor noted in his review, “In The Surfer, an exploitation film designed to build tension, a mild-mannered man faces off against a group that even Andrew Tate might deem a bit extreme. Set in South Australia at the fictional Luna Bay, this place is one where if the heat doesn’t get you, something else likely will. The water sparkles a turquoise blue, but the beaches appear scorched. Into this inferno steps an unnamed man (Nicolas Cage), seeking nothing more than to inspect a cliffside property and catch a wave, but the locals have different plans: ‘Don’t live here, don’t surf here,’ says one, offering little hospitality akin to a switchblade."
