Claudio Musso - Interview Exclusif
In an exclusive conversation, Flickering Myth spoke with Claudio Musso about his acting experiences and his role in Hardware Heroes on the History Channel.
Hello Claudio, welcome to Flickering Myth! Can you share some of your earliest memories of acting and what came next?
I will always remember my first experience in the spotlight. It was an exhilarating performance as The Little Red Hen in Grade 2. The feedback from the critics (my teacher) described it as “spirited.” By seventh grade, I starred in The Wizard of Oz, demonstrating that my range went beyond just farm animals.
From a very young age, whether it was performing heroic speeches in the mirror or perfecting the expression of a classic villain, I realized that storytelling was part of my essence. This passion led me to the esteemed American Film Institute, from which I graduated in 1993. However, my education didn’t stop there; I further developed my skills at The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film School, delving deeper into the art of acting.
While I have explored work behind the camera, fate (along with my passion for performing) kept drawing me back in front of it. Now, I am enthusiastically taking on every role, pursuing my dreams, and demonstrating that it's never too late for a grand comeback. Off-screen, I’m a proud father, which has given me plenty of opportunities to practice delivering Oscar-worthy bedtime stories and indulging in dramatic eye rolls.
Congratulations on your leading role in ‘Hardware Heroes’ on the History Channel. Can you provide some details about the project and the character you portray?
It’s a captivating TV series that premieres this spring on the History Channel. The narrative revolves around the establishment of the large hardware company, Home Depot. I portray Pat Farrah, one of the founders of the Home Depot. Pat is a fascinating character, and I thoroughly enjoyed embodying him. It was exciting to explore his personality. He was an intelligent man and a true visionary!
I conducted extensive research on Pat to accurately represent him, particularly focusing on how he became a hardware store owner and his vision. He transformed the hardware store landscape and was incredibly passionate about his beliefs!
Starting with just two stores in Atlanta, Georgia, Home Depot has expanded to over 2,300 locations across three countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It’s an inspiring story.
Can you share any entertaining details from your time on set?
I had to grow a mustache for the role! I wasn’t a fan of it, so I tried to avoid looking in the mirror too much during filming and even at home.
That sounds intriguing! What are five of your favorite recent roles?
Oh, that’s tough… I really enjoyed playing Eddie in A View from the Bridge, Father Barry in On The Waterfront, and I also had a great time portraying an egocentric businessman in an upcoming film. Of course, playing Pat Farrah for Home Depot was also a highlight. Each character has presented unique challenges.
How would you describe the types of projects you usually prefer?
I tend to gravitate toward screen projects because they present unique avenues for storytelling and the chance to work with a variety of techniques. However, the stage still holds a special significance for me, and I value the energy and connections it fosters.
Do you have a particular creative approach when preparing for an audition?
When I'm preparing for an audition, I like to start by meticulously analyzing the scene to comprehend the character's core desires and needs. I focus on their motivations in that moment, what they aim to accomplish, how they feel, and what’s going through their mind. I examine their relationships with other characters and how those dynamics impact their behavior. I also pay close attention to any subtext, especially the unspoken moments that are crucial for grasping their deeper motivations. Once I have a comprehensive understanding of the character's internal landscape, I begin to incorporate the physicality and vocal choices that correspond with that emotional truth. My goal is to bring the character to life with authenticity and clarity, enabling the audience or casting director to genuinely experience the character's journey.
Is there a specific moment in your career that you consider your proudest?
I would say graduating from the two most prominent schools in the film and television industry, the American Film Institute and The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film School in Los Angeles.
For fun, can you share three surprising facts about yourself?
Sure! I sometimes find myself performing random monologues, delivering impromptu speeches even when no one has asked. I regularly quote movies in everyday conversations, whether it’s a well-known line or an obscure reference—movie quotes are almost like a second language for me. And I may or may not have secretly created a theme song for myself; I certainly have a soundtrack playing in my head as I navigate through life!
Lastly, how can people follow your journey?
You can find my work on IMDb.
