Andrew Ahn Welcomes You to The Wedding Banquet in New Trailer for the Remake

The latest project from Driveways and Fire Island director Andrew Ahn is The Wedding Banquet, a remake of the classic by Ang Lee. This film features a cast including Lily Gladstone, Bowen Yang, Kelly Marie Tran, Joan Chen, Han Gi-chan, and Youn Yuh-jung, and is co-written with James Schamus, who co-wrote and produced the original romantic comedy from 1993. Following its premiere at Sundance and in advance of Bleecker Street’s spring release on April 18, a new trailer has been released.

Here’s the synopsis: “Directed by Andrew Ahn, this delightful comedy of errors focuses on a chosen family as they face the challenges and joys of familial expectations, queerness, and cultural identity. Angela and her partner Lee have struggled with their IVF treatments and are unable to afford another cycle. Meanwhile, their friend Min, who hails from a wealthy corporate family but is in the closet, possesses ample family money yet has a student visa set to expire soon. After his commitment-phobic boyfriend Chris declines his proposal, Min proposes a deal to Angela: a green card marriage in exchange for financing Lee’s IVF. However, their plans for a discreet elopement are disrupted when Min’s doubtful grandmother arrives from Korea unexpectedly, insisting on a grand wedding celebration. With a perfectly cast ensemble of multigenerational talent that includes Bowen Yang, Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-chan, Joan Chen, and Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-jung, this new take on Ang Lee’s cherished, award-winning romantic comedy is filled with humor and emotion—serving as a poignant reminder that being part of a family involves learning to accept and forgive.”

“Weddings are significant milestones in the evolution of your relationships, even if they’re not real. The process of planning and experiencing the event strengthens your relationships,” Ahn remarked. “I aimed to tell a story that truly reflects the community as I have known it growing up.”
