Chloë Sevigny Breaks a Summer Break with the First Trailer for Bonjour Tristesse, Set to Release in May.
After its premiere at TIFF last fall, Durga Chew-Bose’s adaptation of Françoise Sagan’s Bonjour Tristesse has made its way to New York, debuting at the Museum of the Moving Image’s First Look. Greenwich Entertainment has announced a theatrical release date of May 2 for this drama featuring Chloë Sevigny, Claes Bang, Lily McInerny, Nailia Harzoune, and Aliocha Schneider, along with the launch of its first trailer.
The plot summary states: “During the peak of summer, 18-year-old Cécile (Lily McInerny) is idly spending time by the French coast with her attractive father, Raymond (Claes Bang), and his girlfriend, Elsa (Naïlia Harzoune). However, the arrival of her deceased mother’s friend, Anne (Chloë Sevigny), disrupts everything. Amidst the sun-soaked beauty of their environment, Cécile feels her world is jeopardized and, in a bid to reclaim control, devises a strategy to drive Anne away, leading to tragic outcomes. This adaptation of Françoise Sagan’s iconic coming-of-age novel of the same name, Bonjour Tristesse, directed by Durga Chew-Bose, skillfully explores the intricate relationships between women and the ways they influence each other’s destinies.”
Ethan Vestby commented in his TIFF review, “There was a bit of apprehension going into Bonjour Tristesse. It positions itself as another ‘adaptation’ of Françoise Sagan’s work rather than a remake of Otto Preminger’s cinematic masterpiece, which provokes some doubt about the boldness required to think one can surpass such a renowned craftsman at his peak. Directed by writer-turned-filmmaker Durga Chew-Bose with a notable degree of formal confidence (you won’t confuse this with something like Maximum Overdrive in the career transition category), this 2024 version is a commendable effort that will resonate with many who felt disconnected from the original. A significant distinction is that Preminger created the film as a platform for his muse, Jean Seberg, infusing a male perspective into the project. Chew-Bose’s approach leans more toward the feminine rather than overtly feminist, presenting an exploration of neurosis that does not offer straightforward resolutions.”
