Sherman Augustus and J. Alphonse Nicholson are set to join the cast of DC's Lanterns.
DC's forthcoming Green Lantern series, Lanterns, has revealed two new cast members. As reported by Deadline, J. Alphonse Nicholson (P-Valley) and Sherman Augustus (Stranger Things) will join Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre in HBO's latest DCU project.
Lanterns will center on the iconic Green Lantern Hal Jordan, who reluctantly takes on the role of mentor to new recruit John Stewart as they investigate a murder on Earth, which leads them into deeper mysteries and confrontations.
Augustus and Nicholson will portray John Senior, the father of John Stewart. Augustus will depict him in the present day, while Nicholson will represent a younger version. John Sr. is characterized as “the human embodiment of ‘stubborn.’ He tends to dwell on the past and what could have been.”
Nicholson’s John Sr. is described as having a “key recurring role,” suggesting that there will be several flashbacks to John’s childhood and how his relationship with his father shaped him into the former U.S. Marine and newest member of the Green Lantern Corps.
Chris Mundy (True Detective) is the showrunner for Lanterns and is executive producing alongside Damon Lindelof (Lost) and renowned DC Comics writer Tom King. Currently in production, Lanterns is anticipated to be part of DC Studios' upcoming film universe, which will launch this summer with James Gunn’s Superman.
The cast includes Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Garrett Dillahunt (Where The Crawdads Sing) as William Macon, Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire) as Sheriff Kelly, Poorna Jagannathan (Never Have I Ever) as Zoe, J. Alphonse Nicholson as John Senior, and Ulrich Thomsen (The New Pope) as the well-known DC villain and Green Lantern adversary Sinestro.
