Glen Powell, who gained fame in the blockbuster sequel Top Gun: Maverick, has leveraged his considerable movie-star appeal to revive the Twister franchise and is currently heavily involved in the production of Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man. Now, the rights holders for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are hoping to bring him on board for their latest reboot of the 50-year-old slasher series.
As reported by Deadline, Verve, which has held the rights to the series created by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel since 2017, is receiving numerous offers for the iconic intellectual property.
This may seem unusual given that there was a Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequel as recent as 2022, which didn’t fare well, raising the question of why audiences might be eager for a return to the sun-drenched Southern state.
The answer lies with one of the key parties interested. According to the report, JT Mollner, who recently came off his critically acclaimed thriller Strange Darling, along with producer Roy Lee, known for his work on projects like Companion, Barbarian, and Weapons, are eyeing the project. Should they be successful, Powell would be open to reading the script.
The original 1974 film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre led to three sequels in 1986, 1990, and 1995 before the series was rebooted with the fairly well-received The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and its disappointing follow-up The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006). Leatherface reappeared in 2013 with Texas Chainsaw 3D, a direct sequel to Hooper’s original, followed by a prequel titled Leatherface in 2017, and then the Fede Alvarez-produced requel that was released on Netflix in 2022.
Nothing has been officially confirmed, and while it sounds as if the project is generating buzz similar to a rampaging Leatherface, we’d love to hear your thoughts on this news—feel free to connect with us on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
