Henry Fonda for President Trailer Explores America's History Through a Remarkable Career

One of the most intellectually stimulating and densely crafted documentaries of the year is just around the corner for release. Alexandar Horwath’s Henry Fonda for President, which debuted at Berlinale last year, offers a three-hour exploration of the legendary actor's career. Instead of a conventional life story, the director utilizes Fonda's performances and personal experiences to trace the history of America. The film also includes audio from Fonda’s final interview, presenting a captivating method of reimagining the biographical documentary. It will have its U.S. theatrical premiere at Anthology Film Archives on April 3. In anticipation of its release, a new trailer has been released.

The synopsis reads: "HENRY FONDA FOR PRESIDENT marks the feature film debut of Austrian film scholar, historian, and curator Alexander Horwath, a former Director of the Viennale and the Austrian Film Museum. As its title indicates, it is a cinematic portrayal of actor Henry Fonda, but it diverges from the typical Hollywood representation. The film is organized chronologically, following Fonda’s life and career, yet it goes beyond mere biographical depiction by using Fonda as a lens to examine and reflect upon the evolving dynamics of politics, society, and culture in the United States during his era. Proficient in cultural critique, historical documentation, and political insight, HENRY FONDA FOR PRESIDENT also integrates elements of found-footage filmmaking and landscape cinema, blending an extensive range of revealing archival material, including film and TV clips, Fonda’s final 1981 interview, news coverage, and more, with Horwath’s own recordings of various U.S. locations. Building on the legacy of significant foreign reflections on America, HENRY FONDA FOR PRESIDENT offers a remarkable and deeply insightful perspective on American culture from the 1900s to the 1980s, as well as its lasting impact on the world and contemporary society."
