Adam Strange is depicted as an anthropologist and adventurer who was transported to the planet Rann due to a Zeta Beam experiment from the technologically advanced world. Upon his arrival, he became enamored with Alanna, the daughter of scientist Sardath, the creator of the Zeta Beam. This led to further adventures, all influenced by the variable duration of the Zeta Beam’s powers, which extended the budding romance between Strange and Alanna. The authorities compelled him to "volunteer" for the Suicide Squad, a team of expendable Super-Villains used for perilous black-ops missions by the US Government. The solitary sniper soon found himself in charge of a haphazard group of unpredictable villains on a string of nearly impossible missions.
