The complete cast of The Testaments has been unveiled as filming commences for the sequel to The Handmaid's Tale.
As the premiere of the sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale approaches next week, production for its sequel series, The Testaments, is set to begin. Hulu has announced the complete cast joining Chase Infiniti, Lucy Halliday, and Ann Dowd in the adaptation of Margaret Atwood's work. Ahead of filming starting on April 7th—just one day before the premiere of Handmaid's final season—Hulu shared a photo of the cast from their initial table read, attended by creator Bruce Miller and executive producer/director Mike Barker.
The cast includes Rowan Blanchard (Snowpiercer), Mattea Conforti (The Many Saints of Newark), Mabel Li (Safe Home), Amy Seimetz (Sweet Tooth), Brad Alexander (You), Zarrin Darnell-Martin (Ginny & Georgia), Eva Foote (Murdoch Mysteries), Isolde Ardies (Ruby and the Well), Shechinah Mpumlwana (The Fire Inside), Birva Pandya (The Love Club), and Kira Guloien (Women Talking).
The Testaments is set years after The Handmaid’s Tale and presents “a coming-of-age story that follows a new generation of young women in Gilead as they confront the grim future before them. These young women have known no other existence, lacking any real memories of life before their indoctrination. Faced with the reality of being married off and enduring lives of servitude, they must seek allies both new and old in their struggle for freedom and the lives they deserve.”
Infinity will portray Agnes, known to Handmaid’s Tale viewers as Hannah, the daughter of Elisabeth Moss’ June Osbourne, whom she has strived to rescue from Gilead for years. Dowd will reprise her role as Aunt Lydia, responsible for training the Handmaids and closely monitoring them.
Halliday will play Daisy, a Canadian teen whose life drastically changes upon discovering her connection to the Republic of Gilead.
Blanchard portrays Shunammite, a privileged teen from a prominent Gilead family, who enjoys a level of respect and influence among her peers due to her status.
Conforti plays Becka, a girl with modest beginnings who attends school with Gilead’s elite and begins to reconsider the path she’s been groomed for as she matures.
Li will take on the role of Aunt Vidala, a strict enforcer of discipline and the expected successor in Gilead’s women’s sphere.
Seimetz will be Paula, whose recent marriage to a high-ranking Commander elevates her social standing, though her seemingly perfect life is complicated by her new stepdaughter.
Alexander is cast as Garth, a young Commander who becomes involved in the personal lives of the girls he is tasked to protect.
Darnell-Martin plays Aunt Gabbana, a staunch supporter of Gilead’s values and Aunt Vidala's right-hand, known for her rigorous teaching style.
Foote takes on the role of Aunt Estee, the youngest Aunt whose energy and kindness earn her the label of “cool Aunt” among her students.
Ardies will portray Hulda, an innocent and enthusiastic girl excited about the prospects of womanhood, whose candidness and optimism attract loyal friends.
Mpumlwana plays Jehosheba, a driven classmate from a respected family who relentlessly pursues a high-status marriage.
Pandya portrays Miriam, a girl nearing womanhood who feels the weight of the impending marriage season.
Guloien plays Rosa, a nurturing and dedicated Martha who serves as a maternal figure to Agnes, providing essential love in an otherwise harsh household.
The Testaments is created by Bruce Miller, who acts as showrunner and executive producer, with Barker also serving as executive producer and directing the first three episodes of the inaugural season. Moss is an executive producer along with Warren Littlefield and MGM Television.
The Handmaid’s Tale will debut its final season on April 8th.
