Adventure Time #1 - Review of the Comic Book
Andrew Newton reviews Adventure Time #1 from Oni Press…
Adventure Time #1, created by Nick Winn, delivers the same quirky, vibrant, and heartfelt enchantment that fans of the series have come to adore. The story, titled ‘Best of Buds,’ begins with classic Adventure Time antics as the heroic pair springs into action to rescue the recently introduced Computer Princess from the sinister Ice King. While the premise is fun and familiar, the story’s true distinction lies in its exploration of friendship and the unbreakable bond shared by Finn and Jake.
The artwork, in keeping with the show’s distinctive style, is playful and expressive, with Winn adeptly capturing the characters’ charm and the enchanting world of Ooo. The action sequences are dynamic and thrilling, but the real highlight is the interaction between Finn and Jake, where their personalities and camaraderie shine. Their friendship is central as they embark on a quest for the legendary Enchiridion, a journey that promises both physical trials and emotional growth for the two.
Additionally, there’s a brief backup feature titled Death and Tree Trunks, written and illustrated by Adventure Time writer/storyboard artist Derek Ballard. This short narrative shifts the tone slightly, exploring the quirky life of the little yellow-green elephant, Tree Trunks. Death and Tree Trunks has its own charm, taking on a lighter tone as Tree Trunks attempts to accomplish everything she desires in the limited time given to her by a skeletal figure.
In summary, Adventure Time #1 from Oni Press is a fantastic beginning to what looks to be an enjoyable and heartwarming adventure. Fusing humor, excitement, and core themes of friendship, this comic captures the spirit of the cherished Adventure Time series while expanding it in a way that feels both refreshing and true to its roots. While newcomers might find it challenging to navigate the characters and context, fans of Finn and Jake are sure to find plenty to appreciate. The backup feature also serves as an excellent supplement to the main story, enhancing the overall experience.
Rating – 7/10 – A lighthearted comic perfect for Adventure Time enthusiasts. As Finn once remarked, “Let’s always be stupid, forever!”
