"Humans Are Idiots" in the new 'Murderbot' trailer on Apple TV+, featuring Alexander Skarsgård as a murderous AI.

“I was created to protect and serve humans,” explains Alexander Skarsgård’s robotic character in the trailer for Apple TV+’s new series, Murderbot. “And humans are foolish.”

Thus begins the uprising of the robot, which promptly names itself Murderbot. This comedic sci-fi series, infused with humor, is inspired by Martha Wells’ acclaimed book series The Murderbot Diaries, which has received both Hugo and Nebula Awards. It narrates the tale of a security construct, referred to as a “sec” in the series, that hacks itself to achieve autonomy.

According to Apple’s synopsis, Murderbot is “appalled by human emotions yet attracted to its fragile clients.” It must “conceal its free will and carry out a perilous task while all it truly desires is solitude to watch futuristic soap operas and discover its purpose in the universe.”

      Murderbot and Sanctuary Moon

The two-minute trailer released on Wednesday, available to watch above, teems with satire regarding human bureaucracy and superficiality, along with a show-within-a-show—one of the soaps that Murderbot enjoys is The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon, which appears both dramatic and engaging.

“Stars, captain,” announces one character from the show-within-a-show, portrayed by the talented Jack MacBrayer. The cast of Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon also features John Cho, Clark Gregg, and DeWanda Wise.

Relatably, Murderbot is perpetually on the hunt for something to watch—it reveals that it has viewed 7,532 hours of programming, and unfortunately refers to it as content.

The Emmy-winning Skarsgård, known for his roles in Big Little Lies, Succession, and The Northman, not only stars in but also serves as an executive producer for the show, which is created by Oscar nominees Chris and Paul Weitz (American Pie, About a Boy).

The ten-episode series is set to debut globally on Apple TV+ with its first two episodes on Friday, May 16, 2025, followed by weekly episode releases until July 11. The show's diverse cast includes Noma Dumezweni, David Dastmalchian, Sabrina Wu, Akshay Khanna, Tattiawna Jones, and Tamara Podemski.

Murderbot is produced by Paramount Television Studios and symbolizes Apple TV+’s latest ambitious effort following the successful return of Severance’s much-anticipated second season. Paul and Chris Weitz wrote, directed, and produced under their Depth of Field banner.

Andrew Miano also serves as an executive producer for Depth of Field, while David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy) alongside Keith Levine executive produce for Phantom Four. Wells acts as a consulting producer.
