Mike Flanagan's Carrie has been officially approved, with Siena Agudong joining the cast.
Mike Flanagan, the writer and director, has been working on adapting Stephen King’s classic horror novel Carrie into a series for several months. Amazon MGM has now officially approved the adaptation, with Variety reporting that Siena Agudong (from Resident Evil) is the first confirmed cast member, playing Sue Snell, Carrie White’s bully-turned-friend.
Flanagan’s version of Carrie is described as “a reimagining of the story of the outcast high-schooler Carrie White, who has lived in isolation with her overbearing mother. Following her father's unexpected death, Carrie faces the struggles of high school, a bullying incident, and the emergence of her mysterious telekinetic powers.”
In both the novel and its adaptations, Sue Snell initially bullies Carrie at school, but after a particularly distressing occurrence for Carrie, she feels compassion and befriends her. Sue hopes to lift Carrie’s spirits by encouraging her boyfriend to take Carrie to the prom instead of herself.
The role of Carrie has not yet been cast, but Summer H. Howell, known from the Chucky franchise, is in talks to portray one of King’s most famous characters. Production for the series is expected to commence this summer in Vancouver.
“Carrie is an iconic tale that remains culturally relevant over time,” stated Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios. “With Mike Flanagan leading the project and an exceptional team including executive producer Trevor Macy, this thought-provoking series is sure to engage our global audience.”
Flanagan is experienced in adapting Stephen King’s works. As a devoted King enthusiast, he directed Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining, as well as Gerald’s Game, and is currently developing a series adaptation of King’s monumental work The Dark Tower. His next project based on King’s writing, The Life of Chuck, is set to be released in theaters on June 6th.
