A Pacific Rim TV series is set to debut on Prime Video, produced by Legendary and Amazon.
If you've been looking forward to a new installment of Pacific Rim, the franchise is making a comeback, this time as a television series. Variety has reported that the new show is “currently in development at Prime Video, as part of a partnership between lead studio Legendary Television and Amazon MGM Studios.” Eric Heisserer, who will write and serve as executive producer under his Chronology banner, is behind the project.
Heisserer is best known recently for his role as writer, executive producer, and showrunner of the Shadow and Bone series on Netflix. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Arrival in 2017.
While the Pacific Rim franchise started off strong, it experienced a drop in performance with its sequel. The first film, directed by Guillermo del Toro, earned $411 million globally, whereas the sequel by Steven S. DeKnight only made $290 million worldwide.
In the films, Earth is attacked by Kaiju, enormous monsters that come from an interdimensional portal called “The Breach” located in the Pacific Ocean. To combat these threats, humanity creates Jaegers — massive, humanoid robots piloted by pairs of people whose minds connect through a neural bridge known as the Drift. This sets up a dynamic of giant robots versus giant monsters, blending elements of sci-fi, military drama, and anime-inspired storytelling.
There is currently no announced release date for the new TV series, but keep an eye on Flickering Myth for further news.
