Michael Bay is set to direct a film adaptation of the classic video game Outrun.
Michael Bay has overseen his share of remarkable car chases throughout his career, so it's not surprising that Universal has enlisted him to direct the live-action adaptation of Sega’s iconic arcade game Outrun. With Minecraft and Mario raking in substantial box office revenue in recent years, Universal is eager to join the trend. According to Deadline, they have not only approached the blockbuster director for the project, but Sydney Sweeney is also on board as a producer. The screenplay will be penned by Jayson Rothwell (Silent Night).
Originally launched by Sega in September 1986, Outrun became the top-grossing arcade game of 1987 and was the developers' most successful gaming cabinet throughout the decade. In Outrun, players take control of a convertible Ferrari while maneuvering through checkpoints to reach the finish line before the timer expires. The game was notable for its innovative soundtrack, allowing players to choose from three different music tracks as they navigated the course.
If you think about the opening sequence of the otherwise subpar 6 Underground, or the expertly crafted freeway chase in Bad Boys II, you can get a sense of what a Michael Bay-directed Outrun film might entail.
