The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping introduces its characters Haymitch Abernathy and Lenore Dove Baird.
The upcoming prequel to the Hunger Games series, titled *Sunrise on the Reaping*, has cast its two main characters, young Haymitch Abernathy and his girlfriend Lenore Dove Baird. According to Deadline, Joseph Zada (from *Invisible Boys*) and Whitney Peak (from *Hocus Pocus 2*) are the first actors to be confirmed for the film.
*Sunrise on the Reaping* takes place during the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell, when the Capitol mandated that double the number of tributes be selected for a battle to the death in the arena. As fans of the series are aware, Haymitch Abernathy, portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the previous films, emerged as the victor of these games and endured significant trauma as a consequence.
Zada will portray the young Haymitch, who was chosen for the Games at the age of 16, while Peak will take on the role of his girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird, who is a distant cousin of Lucy Gray Baird, played by Rachel Zelger in the prior prequel, *The Ballad of Snakes and Songbirds*.
Lionsgate Co-President Erin Westerman stated, “The Hunger Games franchise has always been a springboard for outstanding young talent, and Jo and Whitney continue that tradition with their remarkable heart, depth, and passion. After evaluating hundreds of talented performers from around the globe, these two emerged not just for their skills, but for the genuine emotion they brought to these iconic characters. Haymitch has always been a favorite among fans, and his backstory is highly awaited in the franchise. His bond with Lenore Dove is intricately tied to the emotional narrative of Panem. We are excited for fans to engage with the story that shaped one of the series' most intriguing characters.”
Producer Nina Jacobson remarked, “Deb Zane and Dylan Jury conducted a thorough (and tiring!) search to find a young actor capable of embodying Haymitch's character. Jo prepared diligently and captured our hearts, while Whitney astounded us as Lenore Dove. When we combined them, it was one of those magical moments in casting when you realize your search has led to the right choice.”
Francis Lawrence returns as director for *Sunrise on the Reaping*, having directed all Hunger Games films since *Catching Fire*. The script is being penned by Billy Ray, the original screenwriter for the series. Jacobson and Brad Simpson will produce through Color Force, with Cameron MacConomy serving as executive producer.
Suzanne Collins' novel, which serves as a sequel prequel to her original Hunger Games trilogy following *The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes*, was released last month and achieved the best opening for the series, selling over 1.5 million copies in the first week.
*The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping* will explore the world of Panem 24 years before the events of *The Hunger Games*, starting on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, also referred to as the Second Quarter Quell.
The film is set to be released on November 20, 2026.
