He manipulated the Galactic Republic's political system until he ascended to the position of Supreme Chancellor — and eventually became Emperor — ruling the galaxy through fear and oppression. The galaxy celebrated his demise at the Battle of Endor, but Sidious had evaded death and meticulously plotted his return to power.
