Joseph Kosinski is set to helm a new Miami Vice film.
Joseph Kosinski, director of Top Gun: Maverick, is set to helm a new Miami Vice film for Universal Pictures. As reported by Deadline, the F1 director will go to Florida to oversee a screenplay penned by Dan Gilroy, known for writing and directing Nightcrawler.
Miami Vice, originally a stylish crime drama created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann for NBC, aired for five seasons from 1984 to 1989. It featured Don Johnson as James “Sonny” Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as his partner Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, two undercover detectives tackling crime in Miami, Florida.
Michael Mann later directed a feature film adaptation in 2006, starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Fox. This movie received mixed reviews and earned $164.2 million globally against a reported $135 million budget. Nevertheless, appreciation for Miami Vice has grown over the years.
It may be a while before we learn who will portray the new versions of Crockett and Tubbs, as Kosinski is involved in several other projects, including a third Top Gun film and a UFO thriller produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
