Jeremy Renner on turning down the offer for a second season of Marvel's Hawkeye: "Did you think I'm only half the Jeremy just because I got run over?"
Jeremy Renner has played a significant role in the Avengers films and the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a substantial time. Since his introduction in 2011’s Thor, Hawkeye has been among the studio's primary heroes, even landing his own spin-off series on Disney+. However, the possibility of a second season for Hawkeye appears uncertain, as the actor has disclosed a low offer he received to return.
In an interview with High Performance, Renner mentioned that he was offered only half of his first season earnings, saying, “They asked me to do Season 2, and they proposed half the money. I thought, ‘It's going to take me double the effort for half the pay and essentially eight months of my time.’”
The actor suggested that his near-fatal accident in 2023 could be a factor behind the low offer, adding, “I wondered, ‘Why? Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got run over? Maybe that’s why you want to pay me half of what I earned in the first season.’”
For those who might not recall, Renner was hospitalized for blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries on January 1, 2023, after being run over by a snow plow that weighed approximately 14,330 pounds.
He clarified that this issue stemmed more from Disney overall rather than Marvel specifically: “This is not Marvel, just Disney, or rather just the accountants pinching pennies. I told them to go fly a kite, given the insulting offer. We didn’t see eye to eye on it. Unfortunately, I still adore the character and would love to continue, but I had to stand up for myself. I didn’t ask for more money, mind you.”
“Just pay me what I made in the first season,” he continued. “It’s disheartening that it didn’t happen, but that’s okay. I’m glad to move on since my body is probably thanking me repeatedly for not taking it on right now. But we’ll see.”
As of now, Jeremy Renner is not scheduled to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, which features one of the largest casts in the MCU to date.
