The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles antagonist Shredder is set to star in a new series from IDW.
IDW Publishing has revealed that the legendary TMNT antagonist Shredder will be featured prominently in his own solo comic series, debuting this August under the title Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder, penned by writer Dan Watters (Batman: Dark Patterns) and illustrated by artist Michele Bandini (Spider-Man: City at War).
“The villains often possess the most compelling stories, and Shredder is no different,” stated Watters. “This narrative follows Shredder on a path of vengeance—turning away from the gods and alliances he’s formed throughout his lengthy and colorful past, reminding New York of why it once feared him so greatly—and why it should again. This is the type of character I am passionate about writing: determined, ruthless, and clawing his way back to power with renewed purpose. It’s going to be an exhilarating journey.”
“I grew up in the ‘80s, so TMNT has been a part of my life, and I've always dreamed of working on one of their comics since childhood. Yes, I've wanted to be a comic book artist since I was five, and my favorite characters have consistently included the fun-loving Michelangelo and the formidable ninja master, Shredder,” added Bandini. “A revenge tale featuring one of the coolest characters ever conceived? I’m excited to see Shredder reclaim what he rightfully deserves: the title of the deadliest villain New York has ever known!”
“TMNT: Shredder was the new title I was most excited to develop when I began working on TMNT,” remarked Senior Editor Andy Khouri. “Shredder is undoubtedly one of the coolest, most intimidating, and iconic villains in American comic book history, and it’s time to return him to his dark origins. Dan Watters was the only writer I considered for this project. His body of work—including characters like Batman and Lucifer, alongside his own pioneering indie comics—reads like a guide on how to write Shredder, a character deeply entwined with mysticism, blades, and blood.”
“Dan’s story is a back-to-basics approach that not only welcomes new readers after Jason Aaron’s historic TMNT run but also enriches the lasting backstory of IDW’s interpretation of this timeless character,” Khouri continued. “Collaborating with Dan on this dark and enigmatic new tale is Michele Bandini, a rising talent in our industry. Michele’s breathtaking cover art is just a glimpse of the enthusiasm and innovation he’s contributing to the project. Merging comic book traditions from the U.S., Europe, and Asia, TMNT: Shredder promises to be one of the most visually stunning books released this year, standing proudly beside Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”
Prepare for the tale of the ultimate ronin as he embarks on a journey from rags to revenge. Changed forever by a harrowing experience, betrayed by those he trusted, and now estranged from the Foot Clan, Shredder will delve deep into New York’s criminal underbelly, where a former protege has created a rival clan with nefarious intentions for the city. In his deadly pursuit of revenge, both old and new enemies will painfully realize the consequences of defiance at the hands of Shredder’s blades.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder #1 will be available for purchase on August 13th, 2025.
