The B-Side Episode 161 – Maggie Cheung (featuring Nick Newman)

Welcome to The B-Side! Here, we delve into the lives of movie stars, focusing not on the films that brought them fame or kept them in the public eye, but rather on the lesser-known projects they worked on in between.

Today is a day of celebration! We highlight the legendary Maggie Cheung! The films we’ll cover include Lost Romance (also known as Story of Rose), Full Moon in New York, Green Snake, and Sausalito. Joining us for this episode is the esteemed Nick Newman, host of the Emulsion podcast for The Film Stage.

We’ll discuss the Hong Kong New Wave, Maggie’s unfulfilled role in Inglourious Basterds, the unique qualities of Sausalito, and Maggie Cheung’s recent delightful interview with Sight and Sound.

Additionally, we’ll touch on Nick’s Sight and Sound List, a piece from GQ, Julia Ormond's portrayal of a famous Audrey Hepburn character, and Nick’s fantastic interview with filmmaker Olivier Assayas from 2022.

By 2004, at just forty years old, Cheung stepped away from acting. Her legacy has only grown stronger in the years since her last films, a topic we explore in this episode as well.
