Jason Voorhees is reintroduced with a redesigned look for the new Jason Universe.
It's been far too long since slasher enthusiasts saw a new Friday the 13th film. Although the wait for the movie seems to stretch on, there's an upcoming A24 series titled Crystal Lake. The hockey-masked killer is getting a fresh look as the iconic franchise prepares for a relaunch.
Adweek has shared an exclusive first glimpse of Jason Voorhees, and he resembles the familiar character we all know and love.
Rob Barsamian confirms, “We aim to preserve Jason’s original essence while progressing towards the future with a distinct look and feel that propels Jason into his next chapter. We’re collaborating with both familiar and new voices from the franchise to achieve that balance.”
For those unfamiliar, Rob Barsamian is the president of Horror, Inc., the company that has been involved with the character throughout his history. Reports indicate he collaborated with horror designer and VFX expert Greg Nicotero: “We provided Greg with our new 13-hole mask and worked together on this complete body design that captures classic Jason,” Barsamian states. “He’s a formidable, towering, and terrifying slasher wielding his weapon of choice, the machete.”
The journey to this point has not been straightforward. Legal battles have hindered new projects, even derailing a beloved video game. However, things appear to be stabilizing. As of 2021, the screenwriter of the original film, Victor Miller, regained the domestic rights to the franchise after a legal dispute involving director Sean S. Cunningham. Horror, Inc. was also part of the proceedings. A final ruling in favor of Miller is expected in 2024. According to Conn, Horror, Inc. is collaborating with Miller, his copyright attorney, and Marc Toberoff, his partner in Friday the 13th LLC, on future Jason Universe projects.
Sheri Conn, chief marketing officer of Horror, Inc., remarked, “We are listening to fans and actively developing a lineup under the Jason Universe banner that includes new films, gaming, immersive experiences, collectibles, and more. Our film franchise is one of the most enduring horror properties in cinematic history, and we’re actively reimagining what the next chapter—and the slasher genre overall—can evolve into.”
Crystal Lake is being referred to as an “expanded prequel,” and it is being supervised by Welcome to Derry showrunner Brad Caleb Lane. Linda Cardellini has been confirmed to portray Pamela Voorhees, with additional casting news anticipated soon.
Stay tuned for more updates from Jason Universe.
