Caught Stealing Trailer: Austin Butler Traverses ’90s New York City in Darren Aronofsky’s Crime Drama

Darren Aronofsky is striving to recover from the low point of his career with The Whale, and he appears to have all the right elements for a much-needed revitalization. Starring Austin Butler, Caught Stealing tells the story of a fatigued former baseball player who unexpectedly gets drawn into a chaotic struggle for survival within the criminal underbelly of 1990s New York City.

Although it's scheduled for a curious late-August release—often considered a time for studio films not ready for summer blockbuster status or awards contention—there’s interest in what the studio describes as an “adrenaline-fueled roller coaster ride.” With its premiere set for August 29, the first trailer has been unveiled for the film, which also features Matt Smith, Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Bad Bunny.

The synopsis reads: “Hank Thompson (Austin Butler) was once a standout high school baseball player, but his playing days are over. Life is manageable for him; he has a wonderful girlfriend (Zoë Kravitz), works at a bar in New York, and his favorite team is surprisingly competitive for the pennant. However, when his punk-rock neighbor Russ (Matt Smith) asks him to look after his cat for a few days, Hank suddenly finds himself tangled in a chaotic situation with a group of dangerous gangsters. They want something from him, but he has no idea what it is. As Hank tries to escape their increasing pressure, he must rely on all his resourcefulness to survive long enough to uncover the truth…”

“I was really frustrated that I couldn’t determine my next step after The Whale. I felt a strong desire to engage in something enjoyable,” Aronofsky shared with Vanity Fair. “I sensed an overload of tension in our everyday lives, and I believed that Hollywood's strength has always been in providing entertainment. I reviewed my projects and realized, ‘You know what? The most enjoyable one I have is Charlie [Huston]’s script.’”
