The comic series "Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton" is set to debut in June.

DC Comics has revealed that Krypto will be part of this year’s ‘Summer of Superman’ festivities, featuring his own five-issue limited series, timed with the character’s cinematic debut in James Gunn’s Superman reboot.

Written by Ryan North (Fantastic Four) and illustrated by Mike Norton (Shazam!), Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton aims to deliver Krypto’s definitive origin story, offering “a heartfelt and poignant perspective on humanity, both good and bad, through the compassionate eyes of the ultimate outsider: a lonely, lost dog with superpowers.”

“Krypto’s origin has always been portrayed rather broadly,” explained Ryan North of Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton. “The little guy begins on Krypton, ends up on Earth, and aids Superman in battling crime. The opportunity to truly define Krypto—to illustrate what a small, lost dog would endure if he found himself alone on an unfamiliar planet called Earth—was incredibly appealing. I also loved the idea of portraying Krypto as the actual dog he is: he doesn’t speak, and we don’t resort to revealing his thoughts through speech bubbles either. Mike Norton’s artwork perfectly conveys what needs to be communicated in every scene.”

There will come a time when Krypto stands alongside Superman, helping him fend off monsters, aliens, and supervillains—a time when this dog will save his adopted world due to the extraordinary powers bestowed upon him by Earth’s peculiar yellow sun. But that moment has not yet arrived.

Currently, Krypto is just a normal puppy on Krypton, enjoying each blissful, lazy day with his family: Jor-El, Lara, and baby Kal-El. However, when a rocket test goes awry, Krypto finds himself lost in space and soon crash-lands, all alone, on a strange and unfamiliar world known as Earth.

Krypto: Last Dog of Krypton #1 is set to hit stores on June 18th.
