Exclusive Trailer for Lucía Garibaldi’s A Bright Future Unveils a Sci-Fi Journey

Following her acclaimed debut with The Sharks, which earned her the Best Director award at Sundance in 2019, Uruguayan filmmaker Lucía Garibaldi returns with her second feature. A Bright Future (Un futuro brillante) is set to have its world premiere on June 5 in the Viewpoints section of the 2025 Tribeca Festival. In anticipation of this, we are excited to exclusively present the film's first trailer, featuring actors Martina Paseggi, Soledad Pelayo, Sofia Gala, and Alfonso Tort.

Here’s the synopsis: “Elisa resides with her mother in a housing complex that feels frozen in time, where large-scale fumigations are commonplace. Pets have vanished, and the population is predominantly elderly. The most promising youths are sent to the North, a supposed paradise where ‘history is being rewritten flawlessly.’ Elisa, the last youth in her community, is chosen to leave. Her mother, a staunch believer in the North, works long hours to secure a coveted travel auction. Elisa's older sister had been sent there previously, and now their mother dreams of reuniting the three of them. The arrival of Leonor, a mysterious nurse with a prosthetic leg, disrupts their routine: Elisa realizes that her youth is a highly sought-after asset. As she undergoes the adaptation process, her sister's distant messages and the North's fixation on perfection and productivity sow seeds of doubt. Elisa is determined not to become just another cog in the new system, even if her defiance makes her the most desired of all.”

“This story arises from a feeling of unease about how, beneath the facade of development or progress, there is often a desire to suppress doubt, idleness, and fragility—the very qualities that define our humanity,” the director explained. “The film depicts a world that isn’t entirely dystopian but rather misplaced, where affection, memory, and desire surface as underground forces, in spite of efforts to regulate or eliminate them. Through the mise-en-scène, I aimed to amplify the connection between the mundane and the unsettling elements of our reality, within this fictional context: they coexist in the same space.”
