The Criterion Collection has revealed the release of The Wes Anderson Archive: Ten Films, Twenty-Five Years on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. This collection features the filmmaker's first ten feature films: Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Isle of Dogs, and The French Dispatch. It will be available for purchase starting September 30th, and pre-orders are currently open at a price of $399.96; for more details, visit the official site.
Wes Anderson's initial ten films encapsulate twenty-five years of vibrant creativity, serving as a continuous tribute to misfits and whimsical dreamers, all set in their own unique worlds, marked by clever humor and an undercurrent of existential sadness that permeates each stunning frame. This significant twenty-disc collector's set features new 4K restorations of the films, more than twenty-five hours of bonus content, and ten illustrated books, all presented in a luxurious clothbound format.
Bottle Rocket, 1996
Wes Anderson first showcased his intricately detailed and somewhat surreal cinematic vision (co-written with Owen Wilson) in this visually charming and warm depiction of three young misfits. Childhood friends Anthony (Luke Wilson), Dignan (Owen Wilson), and Bob (Robert Musgrave) orchestrate an overly intricate yet only somewhat successful robbery of a modest bookstore, then go "on the lam." During their escapades, Anthony falls for a South American housekeeper, Inez (Lumi Cavazos), and they encounter the extraordinary local thief, Mr. Henry (James Caan). Bottle Rocket is a delightful, funny, and affectionate examination of dreamers' follies, shot against glistening southwestern landscapes, and it marked the rise of Anderson and the Wilson brothers.
Rushmore, 1998
This spectacular follow-up from Wes Anderson combines elements of a coming-of-age narrative, homage to French New Wave, and screwball comedy. Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), a tenth grader at Rushmore Academy, is its most involved student yet its least academic. Facing expulsion, he forms unlikely friendships with a beautiful first-grade teacher (Olivia Williams) and a somber self-made millionaire (Bill Murray, delivering an award-winning performance). Accompanied by a soundtrack of classic British Invasion hits, Rushmore transcends genre, conveying the joys and pains of youth with keen humor, emotional resonance, and stylistic flair.
The Royal Tenenbaums, 2001
Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) and his wife, Etheline (Anjelica Huston), had three children—Chas, Margot, and Richie—before they separated. Chas (Ben Stiller), as a teenager, demonstrated an almost supernatural talent for real estate and finance; Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow), a playwright, won a $50,000 Braverman Grant in ninth grade; and Richie (Luke Wilson) was a junior tennis champion for three consecutive years. However, two decades filled with betrayal and failure have obscured their former brilliance. The Royal Tenenbaums is a humorous, poignant, and beautifully styled exploration of sadness and redemption by Wes Anderson.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, 2004
Internationally renowned oceanographer Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) and his crew, Team Zissou, embark on a mission to find the elusive Jaguar Shark that killed Zissou's partner during the filming of their last documentary. Their journey includes a young airline pilot (Owen Wilson), a pregnant journalist (Cate Blanchett), and Zissou's estranged wife (Anjelica Huston). With a star-studded cast including Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Michael Gambon, Noah Taylor, Seu Jorge, and Bud Cort, this wildly inventive adventure-comedy from Wes Anderson captivates audiences.
The Darjeeling Limited, 2007
In Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited, three estranged brothers come together for a meticulously planned train journey across India a year after their father's death. Equipped with eleven suitcases, a detailed itinerary, pepper spray, painkillers, and unresolved family conflicts, Francis, Peter, and Jack find themselves unexpectedly stranded in the desert—marking the beginning of a new chapter in their travels. Featuring a stellar cast including Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, and Anjelica Huston, The Darjeeling Limited is a stunning and humorous film that delves into deeper themes than before.
Fantastic Mr. Fox, 2009
Fantastic Mr. Fox tells the tale of a clever, quick, and exceptionally well-dressed wild creature. Once a compulsive chicken thief and now a newspaper reporter, Mr. Fox moves his family into a new home
