Clint Eastwood Plans to Direct a New Film: "There’s No Reason a Man Can’t Improve as He Ages"
It would not be out of line to consider that Clint Eastwood, who turns 95 tomorrow, could have chosen to retire. Even if his remarkable age were not a factor, last year’s Juror #2 had long been speculated to be a self-styled farewell for one of the most steadfast careers in film history (and it would have served as a fitting farewell). However, he expressed his intention to continue directing during an interview with the Austrian newspaper Kurier, emphasizing that his physical health is “not a concern for a long time yet.” With a confidence that has characterized both his real and fictional personas, Eastwood stated: “There’s no reason a man can’t improve with age. I have much more experience now. Certainly, some directors lose their touch at a certain age, but I’m not one of them.” [Reuters]
While there’s a possibility that the translation from Kurier to Reuters may have been slightly inaccurate, Reuters reports that Eastwood is already in pre-production for a new film. Since this information has not been previously disclosed, it would be a delightful surprise and, considering his typical pace of filming, we could expect a new release in theaters by December at the latest. Nonetheless, we’ll temper our expectations and allow him to enjoy his 95th birthday this weekend in whatever way he chooses.
