A Grand Daring Splendid Journey Trailer: Kogonada Launches Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell into an Expedition

Following his carefully crafted indie dramas Columbus and After Yang, filmmaker Kogonada, who transitioned from video-essayist, is moving on to bigger projects with his upcoming film. A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, written by Seth Reiss and featuring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell, was initially slated to kick off the summer movie season. However, Sony Pictures has rescheduled its release to the more awards-appropriate fall season, now set for September 19. In anticipation of its release, the first trailer has been unveiled.

The plot summary is as follows: “What if you could open a door and step through to revisit a pivotal moment from your past? Sarah (Margot Robbie) and David (Colin Farrell) are two singles who meet at a friend's wedding and soon, thanks to an unexpected twist of fate, embark on A Big Bold Beautiful Journey – a humorous, fantastical adventure where they revisit key moments from their pasts, shedding light on how they arrived at their current lives... and potentially having the opportunity to change their futures.”

“The pressure exists to find a place within the art world where, to gain acceptance from a certain community, you must establish its value,” the director shared with Mitchell Beaupre during the promotion of his previous film. “But I don't necessarily believe that’s the case. Slow cinema can be critiqued; there are elements that may not resonate, but I believe it’s possible. Becoming an American filmmaker comes with the challenge of carving out a career path. These types of films can thrive in countries where there’s funding and support for the filmmaker's vision. I also appreciate different pacing in films, making it a fascinating challenge to create something that truly reflects my sensibilities, while recognizing that, as an American filmmaker, these films often don’t attract huge audiences. It's a complex issue.”

The cast also features Lily Rabe, Jodie Turner-Smith, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Billy Magnussen, Brandon Perea, Sarah Gadon, Chloe East, and Hamish Linklater. Check out the trailer below.
