Chad Stahelski's remake of Highlander featuring Henry Cavill is set to begin filming in September.
As director Chad Stahelski gears up for the worldwide release of the John Wick spin-off Ballerina this week, he is set to transition to his next major project: a remake of Highlander featuring Henry Cavill, known for his roles in Man of Steel and The Witcher.
In an interview with Deadline on the red carpet for Ballerina, Stahelski was asked about the status of the Highlander filming. He has been attached to the remake since 2016, with Cavill selected as the lead in 2021, marking significant development time for the project. Fortunately, filming is expected to commence in just a few months.
“We’re in active prep right now,” Stahelski told Deadline. “We plan to start shooting by mid-September, starting off in London. I hope it’s good.”
Originally released in 1986, Highlander centers on Connor MacLeod, a Scottish Highlander born in the 1500s, who learns he is immortal. Trained by another immortal, Ramirez, he battles others in pursuit of the series' famous line, "there can be only one." The original film featured Christopher Lambert as Connor and Sean Connery as Ramirez.
In the remake, Cavill will portray Connor MacLeod, based on a script by Michael Finch, who wrote John Wick: Chapter 4. Recently, Amazon MGM acquired the rights to the film, and production is set to begin in September in London.
