Dakota Johnson remains unaffected by the chaos surrounding Madame Web, stating, "It wasn't my fault."
Dakota Johnson doesn't feel responsible for the outcomes of Madame Web, or at least that's her perspective as the film's lead. While promoting the Sony superhero film, Johnson was open and frank, even after its release. In a conversation with the Los Angeles Times during her promotional tour for Materialists, she tackled the significant disappointment of Madame Web with her characteristic honesty.
“It wasn’t my fault,” Johnson remarked about the film. “There's a trend where many creative choices are made by committees or individuals who lack any creative instincts. This approach makes it incredibly difficult to produce art or something entertaining. And unfortunately, with ‘Madame Web,’ it began as one thing and became something entirely different. I was merely along for the journey at that point. But this happens; high-budget films often fail.”
Johnson doesn’t seem to hold onto negativity: “I don’t have any regrets. There’s no aspect of me thinking, ‘Oh, I’ll never do that again.’ I’ve worked on even smaller films that didn’t perform well. It doesn’t matter.”
Madame Web grossed $43 million at the U.S. box office and received an 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While it did gather a bit of a cult following, much of the praise was given ironically. Johnson appears to resonate with that irony, which seems to linger.
Currently, Johnson is promoting Materialists, the new A24 film directed by Celine Song (Past Lives), in which she stars alongside Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans. Materialists is set to be released in theaters on June 10th – you can check out the trailer here.
