Jonathan Daviss is set to portray Snoop Dogg in a film.
Jonathan Daviss is set to portray one of music's most iconic figures in a forthcoming Snoop Dogg biopic being developed by Universal Pictures. According to a new report from Deadline, Daviss will lead the cast in this project, which Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Coming 2 America) will direct. The production team includes Snoop Dogg, Brian Grazer, and Sara Ramaker, the president of Death Row Pictures.
As stated by Deadline, the film will explore how Calvin Broadus Jr. became involved in the West Coast hip-hop scene. Adopting the stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg, he showcased his distinctive laid-back flow and clever lyrics at Death Row Records, collaborating with Dr. Dre on his hit debut album Doggystyle. His reach has expanded into various areas, including appearances alongside Martha Stewart or swimming with Michael Phelps during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he became a highlight of the event as seen on NBC and Peacock.
Snoop Dogg has emerged as one of the most significant figures in pop culture. Prior to his recent ventures in Fortnite and his friendship with Martha Stewart, he was a dominant voice in rap, boasting 12 Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and 3 #1 singles. His global record sales exceed 35 million, and his numerous accolades include an American Music Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, two Sports Emmy Awards, and 17 Grammy Award nominations. In 2023, he was honored with induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Young actor Jonathan Daviss is making strides in capturing the essence of this complex character. He is known for his role as Pope in the Netflix series Outer Banks, and his credits also include Netflix’s Do Revenge, Age of Summer, and Edge of the World.
This yet-to-be-titled biopic marks the first project under Death Row Pictures' comprehensive agreement with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios, as the legendary record label seeks to venture into entertainment in new ways. Death Row Records was established in 1991 by The D.O.C., Dr. Dre, Suge Knight, and Dick Griffey, and it played a crucial role in defining a significant era of rap music characterized by its West Coast sound, featuring classics like Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle, and Tupac’s All Eyez on Me. After filing for bankruptcy in 2006, the label was sold to various companies over the years, and it wasn't until February 2022 that Snoop Dogg acquired Death Row from MNRK Music Group. Earlier this year, Snoop Dogg and Death Row Pictures entered into a multi-year agreement with NBCUniversal.
