It has been 60 years since Peter Purves joined William Hartnell’s Doctor Who as Steven Taylor, and to mark the occasion, Big Finish has released two brand-new Doctor Who Short Trips audiobooks. Narrated by Peter Purves, these audiobooks can be downloaded entirely for free.

In these two new adventures, which take place during Steven’s time with the Doctor, Peter Purves reprises his role. Both stories, penned by Jacqueline Rayner, last 40 minutes and feature Steven experiencing an alternate life while becoming embroiled in a perilous game.

The first tale, titled A Forest of All Seasons, sees the Doctor, Steven, and Vicki arriving in an unusual forest where time appears to be frozen. When Vicki goes missing, Steven must confront a mysterious situation involving an alternate version of himself and the villagers who are caught in an unending loop.

The Doctor’s Gambit transports the Doctor, Steven, and Dodo to an alien planet, where they are entangled in a mysterious and perilous competition. Every move they make could be their final one, and with their opponent remaining unseen, the outcome is uncertain.

Peter Purves remarked: “I enjoy both these Short Trips. Jacqueline had an incredibly generous idea when she wrote them, allowing the exploration of Steven’s romantic side, which hasn’t been depicted before.”

Writer Jacqueline Rayner commented: “I adore the character of Steven. Even when he was placed into roles that didn’t quite fit him in the 1960s, Peter Purves made him a distinctive, very human, and realistically flawed character. It’s a wonderful delight that Peter is still bringing Steven to life and discovering new depths in him after all these years – it truly speaks to his talent as an actor.”

These two new Doctor Who Short Trips are now available for free, exclusively on the Big Finish website.
