Doug Liman is set to adapt Stephen King's The Stand for Paramount Pictures.
Doug Liman is gearing up to take on the challenge of adapting Stephen King’s The Stand for the cinema. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the director of The Edge of Tomorrow and Bourne Identity will endeavor to distill King’s legendary 1978 novel into a feature film. Although the story has previously been transformed into a successful miniseries in 1994 and a less impressive limited series in 2019, creating a movie version has proven difficult, having thwarted both George A. Romero and Ben Affleck in the past. Liman is set to direct The Stand and will work once again with his American Made producer Tyler Thompson from Cross Creek Pictures.
This post-apocalyptic epic spans 1,152 pages and weaves a complex tale of Good versus Evil. The narrative unfolds in a world ravaged by an influenza pandemic, where the remaining survivors are drawn toward the kind-hearted Mother Abagail or the sinister Randall Flagg, ultimately leading to a climactic confrontation between light and darkness.
Liman's most recent film was The Instigators, featuring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck in a crime-comedy, and he has several other projects in the pipeline, including the highly anticipated Tom Cruise-in-Space initiative. As such, it's still uncertain when, or if, The Stand will reach theaters.
