Suspended Time Trailer: Olivier Assayas' Intimate Drama Set to Premiere Next Month
The wait for Olivier Assayas’ *Suspended Time* has been quite lengthy, having premiered at the 2024 Berlinale Film Festival, and in the meantime, the director has already completed another film, *The Wizard of the Kremlin*, which is expected to debut in the fall. Before that, his 2020-set drama will hit theaters, with Music Box Films starting on August 15. Ahead of its release, a new trailer and poster have been unveiled.
The synopsis reads: “As society takes a step back in the spring of 2020, film director Paul Berger (Vincent Macaigne) returns to his childhood home in the Chevreuse Valley. Still coming to terms with his parents' legacy and navigating the uncertain future, Paul settles in with his documentary filmmaker girlfriend Carole (Nora Hamzawi), his music journalist brother Etienne (Micha Lescot), and Etienne’s new girlfriend Morgan (Nine d’Urso). They bicker over the details of health protocols and the ethics of a self-isolated lifestyle in an age of constant online shopping, causing the temporary household to dig up old wounds. However, Paul unexpectedly finds solace in the enforced stillness of pandemic life, allowing him to reconnect with the literature, art, and idyllic forests of his childhood. A biting French comedy from the masterful Olivier Assayas, *Suspended Time* is a deeply personal and intensely neurotic tribute to the endless nature of memory and the enchantment of life beyond our screens.”
Rory O’Connor mentioned in his review, “Memes might remind you, but 2019 feels like it was ages ago. It was the year that Olivier Assayas’ *Wasp Network*—a peculiar return to the territory explored in his TV series *Carlos*, later taken up by Netflix during the *Narcos* era—was premiered at the Venice Film Festival. This marked Assayas’ last feature, leading to the longest gap in his 38-year career, aside from *Irma Vep* for HBO. This week, the skillful director returns to Berlinale with the aptly titled *Suspended Time*, a personal essay enveloped in a delightful comedy that shows no indication of its lengthy development. Naturally, it has benefited greatly from it.”
